Dreamachine
Sebastian Wendlandt
Spring 2007
The Dreamachine was invented by Brion Gysin in the fifties as a way of evoking mindaltering states without chemical means. The goal of the Design Specialisation project was to build a working Dreamachine, test it and involve user in designing a device, based on the Dreamachine, that could reduce everyday stress.
The Dreamachine is constructed from an old turnable, a piece of cardboard and a lamp. Holes are carefully cut in the cardboard and it is made to a cylinder, that is mounted on the turnable. The holes are placed so that the Dreamachine flashes at a 8-13 Hz, which envokes the alpha waves in the human brain and allows you to see patterns of colours and light.
