Peter-Paul Verbeek, philosopher of technology
September 29-30, 2005
The philospher of technology, Peter-Paul Verbeek, from the Twente University, the Netherlands, visited the IT Product Design course and Mads Clausen Institute. He gave an exciting lecture on 'What things do': Our modern society is flooded with all sorts of devices: TV sets, automobiles, microwaves, mobile phones. How are all these things affecting us? How can their role in our lives be understood? In this lecture Peter-Paul answered these questions by focusing on how technologies help to share our actions and our perceptions of the world. Furthermore he facilitated a seminar on 'Materializing Morality', where students and researchers tried to design behavior-steering products. In this way the conclusions from the lecture 'What things do' that designing is always a form of 'doing ethics', since products always mediate human action and experience, was taken one step further.
